How to Commit to Quit Smoking

I want to quit smoking - I know I should quit smoking, but do I feel I MUST quit smoking? I love smoking! I also know I?ll be miserable without my cigarettes. They?ve become a part of me, and I almost can?t bear the thought of giving them up...yet I know I have to...

Does this sound familiar? Does your mind bounce back and forth on the issue of quitting smoking? Do you think you should quit smoking and yet you find it impossible to go more than a short time before you?re smoking again? Does smoking make you feel weak? Powerless? Do you wonder if you'll ever succeed at cessation?

You?re not alone.

Nicotine addiction is powerful. Smoking cessation involves a lot of work for most people - it?s not handed to us on a silver platter.

It is doable, however, and the good news is that thousands of people quit smoking successfully every year. Many of them thought at one time or another that they couldn?t do it, yet they have...

So, how did they do it? How did they turn a feeling of should into the certainty of must? How did they make their dreams of quitting permanently a reality?

While there is no magic bullet that makes quitting easy and pain free, there are steps you can take to create the commitment you?ll need to boot cigarettes out of your life for good.

?If you want to change your life, change your mind.?

Positive thinking is great, but positive thinking alone isn?t usually enough to help a person make permanent changes to their life. If, however, you can find a way to alter the meaning of the thing you?re trying to change; if the associations you have to smoking and quitting smoking change in a way that helps you, then you?ve got a good shot at success.

The path to commitment involves changing how you feel about quitting. Intellectually, you can rationalize that you need to quit smoking until you?re blue in the face, but until your emotions engage, and you begin to feel better about quitting than you do about smoking, you?re not going to get anywhere.

Easy Way To Quit Smoking - Stop Making Love To It

Are there any easy way to quit smoking?

Probably not.

If there was an easy way to quit smoking, there will be not one smoke related deaths, no tobacco companies, and the world will be a better place.

Everyone knows that smoking is a major cause of lung cancer, other types of cancer, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and other health problems, and yet people still find it hard to quit smoking or find it easy to start smoking for various reasons.

Furthermore, smokers are aware of the financial impact smoking has on their wallets.

Then why do millions of people still smoke?

The answer is nicotine. Nicotine is the addictive drug in tobacco, and like any drugs, regular use of tobacco leads to addiction. With addiction, it feeds on the persons needs for physical and psychological dependence on the drug.

That is why smokers mentally believe smoking helps them relax and give them that satisfaction, a quick fix.

Therefore, for most smokers there is no easy way to quit smoking.

It is that psychological or emotional attachment smokers have with smoking.

If you are a smoker looking to quit now, think of the best approach, or your own easy way to quit smoking.

Here's one form of an easy way to quit smoking (if any)-

1) Motivate yourself by looking at the anecdotal evidence of the health effects of smoking. The harmful effects of smoking are great reasons to stop smoking.

2) Make an honest review of all the likes and dislikes from smoking, and how it effects your life, work, family, etc.

Devote an effort to question yourself on each positive impact smoking has on your life. Does it really fulfill your long term need?

Review the list over time, and make any necessary changes to the positive and negative impacts.

As well, invite family and friends to share their thoughts and give negative feedback about your smoking habit.

3) Write all the reasons to quit.

4) Make a detailed list of why there is no easy way to quit smoking.

You have to motivate and prepare yourself for what is required of you to quit, and that there is no easy way to quit smoking.

The more you list out and anticipate the obstacles of quitting smoking, and their solutions, the higher your chances of success. For example, 'smoking helps me to relax during stressful periods'. A solution would be to visit the gym or pursue a leisure activity you personally enjoy.

This will give you an easy way to quit smoking.

5) Set a quit date!

Once you combat the validity to quit smoking, then it is now or never.

If you really desire an easy way to quit smoking, then you must overcome your psychological and physical needs of smoking. Start listing all the effects smoking has on your life, question it and focus on beating the addictive habit.

90% of lung cancer occurs in those who have smoked. Want to REALLY quit smoking this time?

IF you truly want to Quit Smoking (and are fed up with programs, patches, pills and gums that don't work), then Quit Now.

Quit Smoking Now

Nicotine addiction is a reality for hundreds of thousands of people the world over. There are numerous `stop smoking' programs to help the smoker to stop successfully in a reasonable amount of time, and offer support and advice when it gets tough. Of course, it is much easier to start smoking than to stop once you are throughly addicted, as the body becomes used to the inflow of nicotine and ceases to make the substance itself.

Much as overweight people try many diets in the hope of finding the magic bullet, many smokers quit more than once before they are finally able to stop for good. They try different `stop smoking'; programs until they find one that works for them. Success depends heavily on how long the person has been smoking and how motivated they are to quit.

Smoking is now proven to cause chronic or deadly illnesses, such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or even lung cancer. You would think that diagnosis of one of these conditions would motivate people to quit immediately `cold turkey', but sometimes it just isn't enough. Smoking is so highly addictive that people feel compelled to feed their nicotine addiction before they address their medical issues.

For those who really want to give up smoking, there are quite a few stop smoking programs available. A health care professional should be consulted first for advice regarding which `stop smoking' program, or combination thereof, would be most beneficial. If you are a smoker who has enough motivation and support from family and friends to do it on your own, then nicotine gum, patches, or pills could be tried first. Many people choose to join `stop smoking' programs such as Nicotine Anonymous, which is based on the traditional 12-step philosophy pioneered by Alcoholics Anonymous. There is also private and group counseling available to people who need more intensive support. A number of online `stop smoking' program options are also available consisting of therapy and support forums, herbal supplements, pills, and other potions. Be sure to research these `stop smoking' programs well before you spend a ton of money on something that just isn't going to work for you.

Whatever `stop smoking' program you choose is only as effective as your desire to quit. Without motivation to change your habits and lifestyle, your efforts will be for nothing. Plan a `stop smoking' program in advance. Plan how you are going to deal with temptation in social settings and times of stress, since this is probably when you have the greatest desire to smoke. Pick a date when you are going to stop - maybe when you are on vacation and things are less stressful - and get your support system in place.

As it's especially difficult to stop if those around you are still smoking, you should see if you can persuade those around you to stop too. And you should have a thorough clear-out of all the things that remind you about the pleasures of smoking. Keep thinking of all the advantages: no more smelly house, no more having to go outside for a smoke because smoking is banned in your office or home, no more people turning away from you because, frankly, to a non-smoker you stink!

A `stop smoking' program can be very successful if it is planned and stuck to by the person who wants to quit. Mind over matter, right? Next time go for a brisk walk or call a friend instead of lighting up, your lungs will thank you.

And there's one more thing that no would-be ex-smoker should forget. Most smokers, especially those who find it hard to quit, smoke for a reason. Perhaps it's good to have something to hold in social situations to save you feeling awkward with your hands. Or it could be a comfort feeling - we all learn from birth that having something in your mouth is very soothing! So when a smoker quits, there's always a temptation to put something else in its place. It's no accident that many ex-smokers put on weight in the months after they quit, or start to drink more alcohol.

Tips For Those Ready To Quit Smoking

If you are a smoker, as satisfying as the habit may be, there will come a time when you will want to quit. The main reason for quitting is ultimately the long-term health of yourself, as well as those around you. There is also the added benefit of money saved from no longer feeding your habit. This may not seem like a big benefit at first, but over time, the savings can be HUGE.

Most people who have quit smoking will tell you that it is a very difficult step to take. In many cases, it can be one of the most difficult tasks someone may undertake in their lifetime. There are steps you can take though, that may help you in your quest to quit.

The first step in quitting is to establish a time to quit and stick to that date. If you know of someone who is also looking to quit, join forces with this person and quit at the same time. That way you can establish a support system between the two of you, which can make it a little easier to stay the course.

Before quitting try to establish where, when and why you smoke. Look for patterns that lead you to smoke. Routines you engage in that involve your smoking. That way when you're ready to quit you can try to avoid these routines to help eliminate the urge to smoke.

When the urge to smoke hits, try to fight the urge as long as possible before giving in. Try to visualize something pleasant to take your mind off it. Maybe chew some gum instead, or enjoy your favorite beverage. This can help make your transition a little easier when your day to quit arrives.

Switch to a brand of cigarettes you don't like. This can make your enjoyment of smoking a little less pleasant, which can help with your transition.

When your start day finally arrives, be sure to get rid of ALL your cigarettes and any other tobacco products. Out of sight and reach, out of mind.

Change your daily routine from what it was when you smoked. If you normally have a smoke with breakfast, try to replace your cigarette with something else.

When you feel the urge to smoke, be sure to do something to occupy your time. Exercise could be the answer. Take a walk when the urge hits, or any other form of exercise you may enjoy. Not only will this help minimize the urges, it will also help your overall fitness and help get your lungs back into shape.

Always carry something with you that can easily be used as a replacement for a cigarette. Gum, toothpicks, lollipops and things of that nature are great to help alleviate the habit of having that cigarette in your mouth.

Think positively. When the urge strikes, you may feel agitated. When this feeling hits, convince yourself that smoking is not the solution and that this mood will pass. Your perseverance will be rewarded if you choose not to give in to your cravings.

Reward yourself. Set mini goals and reward yourself as you reach each goal you set. An example would be for every week you remain smoke-free you then reward yourself with a favorite food, an evening out, or any other activity or item you may enjoy. The choice is entirely yours. Staying smoke-free IS an achievement and one worthy of reward.

Take the money you normally spend on cigarettes and put it into a fund. This could be a bank account, or simply a jar set aside. As the money piles up, you'll see the money you've saved. This can be a great motivation to continue on. This money can also be used as your reward fund, to reward your perseverance.

These are just a few tips to help get you started. Talk to others who have been successful in quitting. Chances are they may have a few creative tips of their own. The main thing to remember is to stay strong and not to give in. It's a difficult task to achieve, but once you've done it, you'll be happy you did.

When People Quit Smoking, Is Weight Gain Unavoidable?

There are a lot of people who smoke out there who, among other reasons, are afraid to try to quit smoking cigarettes for the fear of what they think is inevitable weight gain. Almost everyone they know who has successfully quit smoking really packed on the pounds and they don't want this to happen to them. So, does the connection between quitting cigarettes and weight gain have to do directly with the cigarettes themselves, or are there other, outside reasons why this happens so often to people who "kick the habit"?

Lets take a look at what all of the factors are that cause such weight gain in people who quit smoking and see if maybe this weight gain may be able to be controlled to where it does not have to be a factor when you decide to put the cigarettes down for good.

The fact is you do not have to gain weight when you quit smoking. There are a lot of people who quit smoking who don't gain any weight at all. On average, people who quit smoking gain only up to 10 pounds. Studies have shown that people who have smoked for 10 to 20 years or more, or who smoked one or more packs of cigarettes a day have a higher tendency to gain weight than short time smokers and those who smoked less than one pack a day.

Nicotine, which is a chemical found in cigarettes, does to a small degree keep your body weight down. When you quit and the nicotine begins to leave your body, you may see a marginal amount of short term weight gain, but usually it will be no more than 3 to 5 pounds, mostly due to water retention.

The major reason why so many people will gain a significant amount of weight however, has more to do with replacing the smoking habit with excessive eating habits. Many will substitute sucking on hard candies all day to replace the cigarettes. Others will begin to simply snack on various foods throughout the day as a replacement for the old habit. The cigarette break at work becomes a snack break. The after lunch cigarette becomes the after lunch snack. It is this new habit, which is done almost unconsciously, that is mostly responsible for excessive weight gain when people quit smoking.

When you quit smoking, keeping aware of what you eat, when you eat, and how much you eat along with some physical activity will keep that weight gain to a minimum and may keep you from gaining any weight at all. You also must consider that even if you do gain 5 to 10 pounds from quitting smoking, the risks of smoking cigarettes are far greater than a 5 to 10 pound gain in weight.

Smoking is the cause of more than 400,000 deaths every year in the United States. It would take a weight gain of over 100 pounds to equal the health risks of smoking cigarettes. Smoking causes your heart rate to increase, and you have twice the likeliness to suffer a heart attack than that of a nonsmoker. You inhale around 4000 chemicals from cigarette smoke and 40 of these chemicals are cancer causing. Men are 22 times more likely to develop lung cancer than nonsmokers, and women are 12 times more likely.

With a little effort on your part to keep your eating habits in check and incorporate some exercise into your daily routine, weight gain can and will be at least kept down to a minimum when you quit smoking. You will be in better health, feel better, and have a more positive outlook on life when you make the decision to put those cigarettes down for once and for all.

Exercise And Quitting Smoking

When you plan to stop smoking, bring about other changes in your life style as well. Take a look at all those things that have become a kind of routine and break that routine. Try to do things differently and will make a lot of difference.

What we are trying to do as part of this exercise is that we are trying to create a new environment for you. It is not possible for you to shift to a new apartment so bring about a few changes in the way things are as part of your exercise to quit smoking. Let every thing have a new feel about it. If there was a favorite chair in which you used to sit when you smoked, change the upholstery of the chair or maybe you could stash away the chair into a corner.

Try to set a new routine. Try working out or going to the gym. If that is not possible, try waking up a little earlier and go for a short morning walk. If you can make that a run or a jog, it is going to be very stimulating and is going to be the best way to start your day.

Exercise does not necessarily mean pumping metal. If you do have the time to go to a gymnasium everyday, then that is well and good. But I suppose most of us do not have the time for a regular work out in a gym. So what is the other alternative? Do it at home of course.

But whether it is at home or at a multi-gym, there is something that I want to tell you. Regularity is the rule of the day. It is not getting started that is the difficult part, it is sticking to a regular exercise routine that is difficult and this is what proves to be the stumbling block for most people.

Most people have a wonderful start. In fact it is truly spectacular. They buy track suits and gym-wear, running shoes and a whole lot of other gear. Their first day at the gym is almost a celebration. Then as the days go on, they find it increasingly difficult to meet the domestic and professional demands and so their routine slows down and finally comes to a complete workout burn out.

One mistake that many people make is that they choose the evenings or a work out. If that can suit your lifestyle, then thats fine. But for most of us, by the time the evening lifts up its curtains we are completely pooped. We find ourselves physically and mentally drained. And at that time our bodies will be just too tired for a work out. So it is best to set aside some time for exercise in the morning itself.

There are two advantages of setting apart time in the morning. The first advantage is that in the morning our bodies are fresh and full of energy. Now over here I want to make one point clear.

Many people believe that exercise depletes the body of energy but the case is just the opposite. Exercise pumps up more blood through the different parts of the body and warms up the body, so in fact, after exercise we feel more charged and ready to face the challenges of the day.

The second advantage is that in the morning we can plan for the whole day without letting the exercise routine affect the rest of our activities.

What about those of us who have never worked out before? In such cases you might need to start off under the personal supervision of an instructor and that may require that you go to a gym. But what I would suggest is that there are two simple things that any one can do for which you do not need the help of any instructor.

You know what these are? They are walking and swimming. Any body can walk and those of you who know how to swim can swim. For these two activities you do not need much gear and experts say that these two exercises have no side effects and are excellent stress busters.

So in the morning wake up just half an hour earlier, put on your walking shoes and hit the roads. Most roads will be less crowded at this hour and less polluted too. It is a wonderful way to start a day.

Take a break form coffee and try tea instead. If you are moving around the house, try playing music. Redecorate your room by adding a few pictures here and there preferably of scenery. And while you are redecorating, do what I mentioned earlier that is get rid of every thing that even remotely reminds you of smoking.

Plan your day in such a way that you have something enjoyable to do at the end of the day. It does not have t be something that involves money. We do not want you end up bankrupt. It can be something as simple as spending some time with the family playing a board game or something. Or it can be going out for a walk together.

But I would like to add that watching television just does not fit into this list. The reason is because T.V is not something that demands too much of our attention. We can easily do something else while we are watching TV and what can be easier than taking a smoke while our eyes are glued to the T.V. While you are working on breaking the habit of smoking, you need to move about with people. You need the company of people who can take your mind off that craving and TV doesnt help you do that.

Make a list of those things that build up your stress. Try to steer clear of them. If that is not possible try to find out some stress busters and use them. Do not use stress as an excuse to start smoking. There are a hundred other methods of beating stress. As mentioned earlier, you could try breathing exercises, mediation or even music. There is another excellent way of beating stress and that is using the distressing ball. If you do not have one of those, try wriggling your fingers and toes. That too is a natural method of beating stress.

The point that we are trying to drive home over here is that you need a break from whatever you have been doing for this exercise of quitting to work. Since it is impossible to change your job or your home, you have to bring about as many changes as possible to get that whole new feeling.
