Five Reasons Why People Should Quit Smoking

In this article I am going to write about the reasons why I believe people should stop smoking. I hope it proves to be an inspiration for many people who are potentially thinking of quitting these cancer sticks once and for all. Smoking does and will have a negative impact on your life if of course you continue with this nasty habit, therefore it is definately worth starting to look for the best ways to quit smoking.

I have to admit that I used to be a smoker, I was never on lets say twenty a day but was more of what people would call a social smoker. I would at that point find it very difficult to go out with my friends for a few beers without being able to smoke etc. It actually would be something that I would look forward to and at the stage I had no real reasons as to why I should not do it. After a hard and stressful week at work there was nothing better than the thought of having a pint of lager with a cigarette to go with it.

The problem started to occur when I began to buy packs of ten cigarettes in the week to take to work with me. In my mind I had thought that to smoke at work would give me the same type of pleasure that smoking did whilst drinking etc. I felt very let down when I realised that it just was not the same but for whatever reason I continued to buy and smoke them.

My colleagues at work started to comment on the fact that I was smoking and stated that my clothes really stunk of cigarettes. People in my opinion started to treat me differently, it was like I was a second class citizen. I decided that I needed to stop smoking for these and other reasons, especially as I did not really enjoy it that much apart from when I was in a bar of course.

I stopped smoking for five main reasons:

1. To save money as a packet of cigarettes costs a lot of money.

2. I did not like my clothes smelling of cigarettes.

3. Health reasons, smoking is the cause of many health problems including cancer.

4. Smoking can be a big turn off to women. I found it hard enough to meet and attract women and to give them another reason not to like me was just being stupid.

5. I wanted to be classed as a non-smoker as I felt that I was been treated like some sort of loser when I was a smoker.

It was not easy to quit smoking but it is certainly worth while, why not give it a go, you may well surprise yourself.

Quitting Smoking: How Long Do The Cravings Last

Statistics say that over 70 per cent of smokers want to quit. So what's stopping them? For many, the thought of going through lengthy withdrawal symptoms is enough to send the hand snaking towards the Camel pack. In reality, the pangs are far less than people fear. But how long do they last?

Giving up smoking is like getting addicted in reverse so it's important to understand the nicotine addiction process. Scientists used to think addiction was a long drawn out process taking up to a year. Now they've come to recognize it begins with the first puff when nicotine enters the brain.

Nicotine is a psychoactive drug causing changes in brain chemistry. Researchers have found that nicotine takes over the reward pathways. These are an part of an area of the brain that rewards good and useful behavior with a feeling of pleasure. It does this by stimulating the release of the neurotransmitter dopamine.

The brain learns the intake of nicotine is good and remembers the sensation of smoking as pleasant. Nicotine actually causes changes to brain chemistry. So when the smoker quits and nicotine intake is stopped, the brain needs a period of adjustment to get back to normal. During this period, the ex-smoker feels the pangs of need for tobacco.

Though the blood is free of nicotine within less than 100 hours of the last cigarette, only when those brain changes are undone is the ex-smoker truly free from the physical addiction to nicotine. This is a gradual process and much is done in two to three weeks or so. But the physical component is not the only danger.

Mental addiction is another facet of smoking that makes quitting so difficult. This means associating smoking with regular activities, places and situations. It makes up the 'habit' aspect of smoking. Examples are morning coffee, after lunch, with a beer in the pub. All pleasurable daily routines associated with lighting up a cigarette.

During this crucial period vigilance is required as the craving to smoke can flare up out of the blue. So what to do when this happens? The pangs of nicotine withdrawal can be likened to an itch waiting to be scratched. So the thing to do is to scratch without using cigarettes. Green tea and herbal teas such as valerian are useful when the pangs come. Another option is the draw on a menthol inhaler. And any form of activity especially exercise is good. Ideally the ex-smoker to be would prepare a grab bag of techniques in readiness. And hypnotherapy can be effective in the treatment of mental addiction

The magic day arrives when you go to bed and realize the thought of a cigarette hasn't entered your mind all day. This should happen by day 90 at the latest and is a wonderful feeling. Six months after taking the last puff, you'll be free.

Understanding the addiction process is a key factor in quitting successfully. Make the decision to quit now and find a method that suits you.

Quit Smoking - The Right Way

If you are anything like the estimated 70% of smokers in the United States, you want to quit smoking.

In 2004 there where 44.5 million smokers in the United States alone, more than 31 million of these want to stop smoking.

If you have ever tried to quit smoking, you know how hard it can be. Well, I am here to tell you, it doesn't have to be that way.

So, how do I quit you say.

Good question.

If you where to believe the ads you see on TV, you need to buy prescription drugs, nicotine patches, and whatnot, then use these expensive ?magic? solutions for up to several months, then finally you MIGHT be able to call yourself a non-smoker (if you are lucky).

But if I where you, I wouldn't waste my money. Been there, done that.

The single biggest reason people fail to quit smoking is that they don't understand why they are smoking, what keeps them lighting up cigarette after cigarette. You have probably heard many times that the nicotine in cigarettes is the cause of your addiction.

Sure, nicotine is somewhat addictive, but it is not a strong addiction, and beating it is NOT hard at all.

The reason people fail to stop smoking is their mind, and once you have the information and understand how your mind works when it comes to stop smoking, quitting will not be hard at all.

Knowledge is power, and when you understand how this works, you will not need to buy any pills or patches, you could be a non-smoker in just a few hours.

How I Quit Smoking

Programs that claim they can help you quit smoking are a complete waste of money and here's why. By the time you've read the useless advice they offer, you'll quickly realise you've been conned and start reaching for your cigarettes.

Quit smoking programs can seriously damage your wealth

Fellow smokers, light up sit back and read on. It's time to stop wasting money on gimmicky ideas that claim they'll help you quit the dreaded weed. Money that would be better spent on a few multipacks of fags so you can carry on smoking to your heart's (and lungs') content. Don't beat yourself up with thoughts that you're the odd one out with no willpower. Forget their extravagent claims that they and they alone can help you. They're only interested in your money and once they've got it as far as they're concerned you can smoke like a kipper.

But surely something's got to work

Spot on, something has got to work and while I tell you why, go ahead and spark up another cancer stick. The reason these programs can claim to work is the scatter gun approach. In other words if enough smokers are dumb enough to part with their hard earned then a percentage of those are going to manage to give up. Maybe having spent money on a program claiming to help them quit they somehow develop that extra willpower to succeed. I'm convinced it's more to do with the fact that they want to see a return for their money rather than any radical advice contained in the program. Time for another ciggie as we move on - that's a really bad cough you've got there by the way, ever thought about giving up?

I can stop you coughing

Well, when I say I can stop you coughing what I really mean is that I can stop you coughing up your money on quit smoking schemes that don't work. You see I've spent fortunes trying many different methods. Let's start with hypnosis. Does anyone seriously believe this mumbo jumbo works? Here's how it went for me. Some weirdo bombarded me with soothing words, lulled me into a deep sleep and then clicked his fingers to waken me. Well, I don't know about you but the first thing I do when I wake up is have a fag. Nicotine patches were a waste of time as drip feeding me shots of nicotine just made my cravings for a smoke even worse. As for gum, who wants to spend their entire waking life chewing like some morose teenager? Add the cost of the foul stuff and it's no wonder I couldn't wait to light up a cigarette. Talking of which, you must be about ready for another one now.

I'd just about given up

Unfortunately, the only thing I'd just about given up wasn't cigarettes. No, I was on the verge of accepting that there are no sure fire cures, no quick fixes and no cast iron certain methods of quitting. I'd more or less decided that I was destined forever to smell of an old ashtray, to gasp for breath at the slightest physical exercise, to wake up in the morning coughing and spluttering like a misfiring car engine. Then the fickle finger of fate stepped in to change my life around. You see, out of the blue, I ran into an old friend I'd not seen in over ten years. We went to a bar, set up a couple of beers and began reminiscing about the past. Knowing Jim was a smoker I tossed my cigarettes across the table and, to my surprise he tossed them right back at me. Grinning he explained how he'd quit. I couldn't believe it because the Jim I knew was a regular 40 a day man who never showed any inclination to give up. When I asked him how tough it had been he told me it'd been easy, stress free and he'd not even suffered the usual piling on of weight associated with quitting smoking.

at this point I'm going to give you two choices

you can click on that little white cross in the top right hand corner of the screen and light another fag, then another and so on.....

or you can read on and find out how Jim did it

Great, you're still with me so I guess I've helped you give up at least one cigarette - it's a start. I was as intrigued by Jim's story as you obviously are and wanted to know just how he'd quit his 40 a day habit. I'd already done a quick mental calculation that told me he must have been saving himself close on to $2500 per year! If he could do it I figured I could too. Jim explained that two years back he'd suffered a mild heart attack that frightened the living daylights out of him. His doctor pulled no punches and warned him he'd be dead inside a year unless he gave up smoking. He referred Jim to a quit smoking program and told him if he followed it religiously it would teach him in just three hours how to give up cigarettes for good. 'So what did you do Jim?' I asked. With a grin he recalled how he'd gone home and lit a cigarette as he waited for the

program to download on his computer. And believe it or not, that was the last cigarette he ever smoked.

QUIT SMOKING RIGHT NOW

I think you can guess what I did when Jim and I finished reminiscing. Following his tradition I lit what I sincerely hoped would be my last cigarette and studied the program. It was like a breath of fresh air which, to a smoker, is no bad thing! I found it innovative, original and powerful. In fact so convincing was its message that almost without thinking I crumpled up three unopened packs of cigarettes knowing that I'd not be needing them. And so it proved. I'd had my final cigarette thanks to Jim. It worked for me, it worked for Jim and it has worked for thousands of other smokers. Now that you've discovered this opportunity do not waste it. Throw away the cigarettes not the opportunity. What you pay for the program will be recouped many times over from the money you save by not having to buy any more packs of cigarettes. Add to that the healthier lifestyle you'll enjoy and it's a no brainer. Don't pass up this chance, you know it makes total sense. Do it.

Acupuncture Quit Smoking

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical procedure. In essence, acupuncture means stimulating certain points of the human body in order to archive specific results. The procedure includes penetrating the skin with thin needles.

Acupuncture is used for various reasons - from stimulating the fertility of women to pain relief and osteoarthritis. Nowadays acupuncture quit smoking is a widely used practice that (according most who have tried it) gives very satisfactory results.

If you are eager to try acupuncture quit smoking programs, first you need to be sure you have found a licensed acupuncture practitioner. Your doctor should be able to refer you to a licensed and experienced acupuncturist. You can also check at the national acupuncture organizations such as the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). The best option is to find a person who has proper medical training, as he is likely to better asses your medical condition and required treatment. After you have found an acupuncturist, ask for references from previous patients.

The usual places of your body where acupuncture will be done are your ears. The feeling is not painful and most people find it relaxing. Acupuncture is safe as long as proper needles are used. Of utmost importance is the needles used to be sterilized to avoid infections.

Acupuncture quit smoking programs should result into reduced carvings and reduced level of withdrawal symptoms. Some people combine acupuncture sessions with hypnosis as these two methods delivery really good cessation results.

Normally your acupuncturist will ask you various questions during your first consultation. He will try to gain a full picture of your health, lifestyle, behavior and the desired results. Based on the information provided (it is vital that you are honest and do not hide any medical problems you have had or currently have as well as any treatments or medicines you are taking) he will asses your condition and inform you how many sessions you will need. A good therapist will keep you informed about the progress you are making. Your acupuncture quit smoking program may be finished for a few days or continue for a couple of weeks.

Acupuncture prices may vary but the good news is that (in most or the cases) it is covered by your health policy. If you are not sure about this, check with your insurance company.

A modern alternative of acupuncture quit smoking practices is the laser treatment. It works on the same principle as acupuncture - specific points of your body are stimulated with the use of a low-level laser.
